Telangana Cyber Bureau Foils Rs 85 Lakh Digital Arrest Fraud Targeting Elderly Retiree

Prompt Intervention Prevents Massive Financial Loss in Impersonation Racket

Prompt action by law enforcement authorities in Telangana has successfully thwarted a high-value cyber fraud scheme, safeguarding the entire life savings of an elderly resident. Officials from the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) managed to block a suspect bank account containing Rs 85.20 lakh shortly after an 85-year-old former banking professional from Neredmet was manipulated into transferring the funds during a sophisticated “digital arrest” trap.

Anatomy of the High-Pressure Deception

The fraud unfolded when the elderly victim received a call from an individual falsely representing himself as an officer belonging to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). To build credibility and intimidate the target, the cybercriminal engaged in a video call while clad in an official police uniform and spoke in Telugu.

During the interaction, the scammer asserted that an individual identified as Abdul Salam had illicitly used the senior citizen’s personal identity credentials. According to the caller’s false claims, these credentials were used to open multiple bank accounts involved in fraudulent financial transactions totaling nearly Rs 2.5 crore across the states of Kerala and Karnataka.

Exploiting the senior citizen’s anxiety, the impostor issued threats of immediate detention and severe legal ramifications. The victim was strictly instructed to maintain complete confidentiality, with the caller warning that breaking silence would prompt law enforcement personnel to raid his residence.

Escalating Demands and the Unraveling Scam

Exploiting the pressure tactic, the fraudster directed the victim to transfer money under the guise of an official Reserve Bank of India (RBI) verification process, promising that the funds would be fully returned once cleared. Trusting the alleged law enforcement authority, the senior citizen transferred Rs 85.20 lakh to the specified account.

The deceit came to light when the fraudster pressed further, demanding an additional transfer of Rs 42 lakh. This secondary request triggered suspicion, prompting the elderly man to consult his bank. Upon discovering that he had fallen victim to an elaborate scam, the retiree immediately filed a formal complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal on August 26, 2026.

Rapid Law Enforcement Mobilization and Recovery

Upon receiving the alert, officers at the TGCSB launched an immediate financial tracking operation. By mapping the movement of the stolen capital, investigators identified the destination account situated at an IDFC Bank branch in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and successfully froze the funds before the perpetrators could siphon them away.

With the entire sum of Rs 85.20 lakh successfully recovered, the investigation has been formally reassigned to the Cybercrime Police Station in Malkajgiri for detailed legal proceedings and prosecution of the criminal network.

Recognizing the Red Flags of “Digital Arrest” Tactics

Law enforcement agencies continuously remind the public that legitimate investigative bodies do not operate through virtual intimidation. Key warning indicators include:

  • Coerced Video Interrogations: Government and security agencies do not conduct formal investigations or order arrests over personal video calling platforms.
  • Mandatory Secrecy Directives: Cybercriminals often prohibit victims from speaking to family or local police to prevent the fraud from being exposed.
  • Requests for Clearing Accounts: Neither law enforcement agencies nor the central bank ever demand cash transfers to private accounts under the pretext of verification or safety audits.
